  fku0000 (fku) 于 (Sat Jul 19 16:07:44 2008) 提到:

someone asked me a while ago what I like / dislike about BMWs. so I thought
I would put down my years with BMWs.

I had been for the most part a Japanese car driver, until I had an Audi A6 (
a big dissaster), and then I took on 330i (2003 MY I think). followed that,
we got a 530i (2005) and shortly after that a 2000 M-coupe. the 330 and 530
were bought new but the M-coupe was bought used: I was driving down in the
middle of western Mass and passed this car parked on the side of a country
dirt road with a forsale sign, and bought it on the spot. owned it for just
shy of a year and sold it to a young dude from Hawaii.

what I like about those cars:
a) great compromise of handling and comfort (the M-coupe is the exception
here): I have owned many cars that will run circles around those BMWs in
terms of handling, or comfort. any RX7 will be a magnitude or two better
than the 330. However, the rx7 cannot carry four individuals in still and
deliver them to their destinations still relaxed.

b) a set of brakes: the most impressive part of any BMW, even the 316, is
those brakes. they are absolutely confidence inspiring. with my Conti tires
and those brakes, I can stop on a dime, literally. I have never driven any
car whose brakes have so much bite, cold or wet.

c) a great chassis: when you drive the bmw over bumps, you feel that the car
is solid as one piece. the "wholeness" is something you don't get in most
passengers sedans. to me, that tells a sports sedan from a passenger sedan.

d) a transmission that matches the engine: BMW always has very aggressive
shifting logic in their engines and very little slippage in their automatic
transmission. this allows sporty downshifting and gives the impression of
abundance of power and torque. this holds true even with automatic
transmissions sourced from other OEMs (like GM). no other manufactuers have
been able to do that, even with the identical transmissions.

e) an understanded no nonsense styling (with a few exceptions): most of the
older BMWs have clean lines, and they are not fancy cars (Maserati for
example), but they get the job done quietly and confidently. aka very German
. however, some of that is going away under this Chris Bungle a-hole.

now the minuses:

a) their quality / reliability sucks: I have had multiple issues with my 330
and it is nothing short of a lemon.

b) that f@#$king brake dust: those suckers give out tremendous amount of
brake dust and the wheels go black in a matter of weeks. with all the money
we are paying, BMW should at least figured out a solution by now.

c) the high cost of ownership: those suckers cost tons of money to buy and
more to keep them running. I just went through my 40k maintenance and needed
new tires (for the 3rd time! in just 40K), new brakes (3rd time in just 40K
). they wanted $50+ for a pair of wipers! if not for the fact that I love
their wipers (no water streak, clean as a whistle), I would have gladely
picked up a pair at Walmart for $6 and change.

also,  a big plus for BMW is that I really like our local BMW dealer. they
have always gone out of their way to help us. when we were looking for an
awd vehicle last year, they gave us a xc70 (they are also a volvo dealer)
and a 535 wagon to driver over the weekend, closed the deal over the fax and
prep'd the car for us and delivered it to our house the night before our
return and with a big red rippon tied to it.

will I buy another BMW? unlikely. I would have picked up a miata hardtop as
my dream car if I had to buy a car for myself.

will we buy another BMW? very likely. it is a solid car that blends sporty
handling with comfort, and we for the most part don't value reliability that
much - we have more cars than drivers and we drive mostly around town.

does BMW offer the best bang for the buck? the answer is highly subjective.
But I do think at 2x the prices of comparable Camry / Accord, it is hard to
justify the premium you pay for a BMW.

hope it helps.

nice job.

a question:

Did you drive hard on your 330i? Does it come with a sport pkg?

Normally it won't need so frequent tire/pad replacement for just 40k miles.

I would say no. I do do hard acceleration and turn but typically at low
speed (less than 30-40mph). i also accelerate to 80-85-90mph from high way
speed but that's mostly a short burst.

other times, i am just coasting in town doing 25-30mph doing grocery runs or
picking up the kids, that sort of stuff.

yes, it does come with a sports package.

the m-coupe is one of the best cars ever made by BMW, aside from the super-
duper M1, in my view.

the chassis is extreme solid, and the body rigidity is unparralleled. the
suspension is more on the softer side for cars of its type but that offers
good compromise between handling and daily driving.

the gen 2s are very rare and quite difficult to find. but the gen 1s do come
by from time to time.

with more money, you may be able to look into a NSX.

G35 vs. 3-series.

both vehicles are quite similar and compete head on for the most part. the
infiniti is a very nice car, far better equip'd than the bmw is at the same
price point.

in terms of handling, they are very similar, except that the bmw has a more
rigid body and it has a gentler transition from having grip to not having
grip. the steering on the bmw gets progressively lighter as you push the car
closer to its envelope. the infiniti does the same except that a) the
trarnsition is much faster, and b) when one of the wheels does lose grip,
the car quickly starts to fish tail.

now, that can be a plus for some drivers but for most drivers it can be a
surprise, especially on slippery surface.

the single biggest difference between the two cars, however, is in
transmission and design philosophy.

a) transmission: both engines are great and free reving. the bmw will
downshift like a mad dog the moment you step on the gas. the infinit takes a
second or two and the transmission downshifts. rather than downshifting a
couple gears, the infiniti tends to downshift a gear at a time, to protect
its gas mileage I assume.

this issue isn't unique to infiniti  as bmw always has great  (and
aggressive) transmission mapping, even for transmissions they sourced from
other OEMs.

b) design philosophy: the bmw is by far a car. by that, I means that there
is very little to distract you from your driving. everything they do is
under the assumption that you buy a bmw to drive. the audio system is crappy
for the most part, the seats are firm, and supportive, the interior isn't
of the highest quality, the a/c is noisy, all the buttons are where you
expect them to be, there is nimimum technology content, and overall creature
comfort is on the bottom of their priority list. This is particularly true
for the 3-series - which is more of a driver's car, than the 5/7-series
monstracity.

the infiniti, on the other hand, is more of a technology marvel first then a
car second. there are always fancy technology standard on that car, the
interior layout is fancy, full of chrome everywhere. the focus is placed on
surrounding the driver with technology after technology.

there is no doubt that there is a market segment for that type of approach
but for me, when I pay that much for a car, I want to drive it not dealing
with those gadgets.

so I would expect the infiniti is much more appealing to the GPS or iPod
genreation and the BMW to the Atlas generation.

  fku0000 (fku) 于 (Sun Jul 20 18:17:15 2008) 提到:

"How come so many bimmer fans treat x5 like a pig?"

the X3/X5 are quite popular among BMW owners. But as a person who enjoys
driving and values handling, I am not sure how the X3/X5 can possibly
compete with a 3-series (or a 5-series for that matter). they are just too
bulky and too tall to attack corners the way a sedan would do.

I think the 1-series (135 in particular) will do really well among bmw fans.
it is smaller, tighter, more intimate, and has comparable (and sometimes
better) performance to the M3.

I really don't know, and I guess the answer depends on what you want more.

the X5 is probably the best handling suv, an oxymoron by itself, aside from
the porsche, and the price is quite reasonable.

the Q7 is a little bit cheaper but offers a better awd system.

a friend of ours just got an R and it is a superb people hauler, especially
if you have young kids.

none of them hold a candle against a landcruiser or a rover but they have a
lot of others to offer than the landcruiser or a rover.

so which one you go depends on what is more important to you.

appointment to put them on my car this afternoon.

Supposedly those pads have slightly worse initial bite than but comparable
fade resistance to the OEM pads and are almost dust free.

I will let you know how it goes afterwards.

quite update. I drove the car over the weekend with the new pads all around
for about 100 miles.

good:
- no visible brake dust. the rims look as new as when they were put on.
- low price: I paid about $100 for the front and rear pads, 50% of what I
would have paid for OEM pads.

bad:
- considerably less initial bite: with the OEM pads, I rarely push the pedal
beyond 50%. now I often reach 50% and more to stop the car. the situation
improves slightly once the pads warm up but still the differernce between
the axxis and oem pads is substantially. I would say that the axxis pads
have about 1/3 - 1/2 less braking power than the oem pads.

Is it worth it? I am not sure. having great braking power is very important
to me so I am not sure it is worth it to sacrifice that for better
appearance.

But if you are so sick and tired of the dust from the oem pads, this is a
good alternative.

for me, I will take the axxis pads off once I take the car in for the next
service.
